About 'Joe' Arnsby and 'Betty' Mackay

THE FOLLOWING WAS ALMOST ENTIRELY WRITTEN BY EILEEN MARIE ARNSBY

The following entry, come upon by chance in the book of VC citations seems more than a coincidence. In Walter Connors Army Account Book under the heading "Services prior to enlistment with the 88th Regiment", is written "nine months to serve with an elder brother' but does not state the regiment that was. The VC book states:

Connors, Joseph: Private, served in the Crimean Campaign, and for his services was, on its institutions, awarded the Victoria Cross (London Gazette, 24th Feb., 1857) : Joseph Connors, Private, No. 2649, 3rd Regt. (The Buffs, East Kent Regiment, Regimental District No. 3), distinguished hmself most conspicuously at the assault on the Redan 8th September, 1855, in personal conflict with the Russians; rescued an officer of the 30th Regt., who was surrounded by Russians, by shooting one and bayoneting another, and was observed inside the Redan in personal conflict with the Russians for some time. Was selected by his company for the French War Medal.

The coincidence is in two cases. First it is seldom one sees the name "Connors" with the "s"; according to a dictionary of Irish names it is either O'Connor, Connor, Conor, and the true descendents of the clan O'Connor are in the West of Ireland. Secondly, in the naming of sons (at the time invariably given names of family, Walter Connor's daughter Delia named her third son Walter Joseph.
